Mount Kenya Sawmills Ltd

Crafting timber with heritage and care for Kenya and beyond

Our Story

Mount Kenya Sawmills started in 1976 by our grandmother, late Durgaben Shah. She was a tough woman who started small through hardship and strong work ethic, using a tractor-operated saw and supplying timber to yards in Nairobi. In the 1980s and 1990s, we imported second-hand band saws and heavy machinery, processing around 18 metric tons of logs per day. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, with a full moratorium on forests, we stopped processing and moved into joinery and carpentry.

Mt Kenya Sawmills is a small, well run family business. We asked them to make wooden tops and shelves for our kitchen and outdoor furniture for our lounge. What they delivered was beautiful and functional. They are professional, build quality, have an eye for design and with a deep knowledge of woods, and were a joy to work with. We have many more projects for them to help us with.

Mt Kenya sawmills installed a deck at Borana Lodge below our pool. The relationship from quotation to completion, the materials used, and the team they brought on site were all exemplary. The after service has been absolutely fantastic. We are thrilled with what they did and look forward to doing another project with them in the near future. We also found the technical advice to be extremely useful and very creative.

If you are looking for a custom-made wooden bed, Mount Kenya Sawmills is the place to go. They don’t just sell you a bed — they guide you through the entire process, helping you design exactly what you want while offering great advice on what is possible and which type of wood will best suit your ideas. Annay showed me several design examples for the bed and matching bedside cabinets and gave excellent guidance throughout. He is truly an artist with wood and has an incredible ability to turn your ideas into reality. From the first design discussions to the finished bed, the whole process took only about two and a half weeks, and the result was absolutely worth it. I will definitely be coming back for a wooden dining table with chairs and a bar for my veranda. If you want something truly special made from wood, Mount Kenya Sawmills is the place to go. Annay and the team will bring your ideas to life. Many thanks to the Mount Kenya Sawmills team for the great support and the beautiful bed.
